Subaru Natsuki is a NEET who is suddenly summoned to a fantasy-similar world. In the late 2000s, the light novel series The Familiar of Cipher (Zero no Tsukaima) spawned a number of fan fiction on the website Shōsetsuka ni Narō ("Permit's Get Novelists"), besides known as Narō. Tappei Nagatsuki initially began writing The Familiar of Zero fan fiction on Narō, before building on its isekai ("other world") concept to write his own original web novel series on Narō, called Re:Zero, which began serialization in 2012.[vii]

The series' editor at MF Bunko J, Masahito Ikemoto, first became aware of the web novel in Apr 2013, when information technology began to appear on his Twitter feed.[8] He was immediately impressed by the series' employ of Return by Decease, and how it was a "depressing, withal surprising, twist on the fantasy genre," and began working with Nagatsuki to adapt the series into a light novel.[viii] [9] Most light novels are around 250 pages in length, but Nagatsuki submitted a manuscript of more than ane,000 pages for the get-go novel, forcing Ikemoto to edit it heavily.[9] While Nagatsuki wanted to engage in worldbuilding early on, Ikemoto felt that it was more necessary to make the readers experience engaged with the characters. Prior to his involvement in Re:Aught, illustrator Shin'ichirō Ōtsuka worked on video games, which led him to draw the backgrounds first when illustrating the series.[x] After reading the web novel, he submitted a number of grapheme designs for the major characters to Ikemoto.[eight] Subaru's initial design made him look like a delinquent,[eight] with Otsuka later describing it as "not the face of a boy in his teens,"[11] leading Ikemoto to request that the character be "more than friendly and less fierce" and then that the audience could empathize with him during emotional scenes.[ix] Originally, Emilia's character design appeared extremely apparently, and then a number of features were added to make her more interesting.[nine] Ikemoto specified that she must fit the "archetypal heroine" mold.[8] Rem and Ram also underwent pregnant changes from the commencement draft: their original designs lacked the characteristic hair parts, and their maid uniforms were longer and more "traditional."[ix]

A manga adaptation by Daichi Matsue, titled Re:Zero: -Starting Life in Some other Earth- Chapter one: A Day in the Majuscule ( Ｒｅ：ゼロから始める異世界生活 第一章 王都の一日編 , Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Dai-Ichi-Shō: Ōto no Ichinichi-hen ), began serialization in the August 2014 issue of Media Factory's seinen manga magazine Monthly Comic Live on June 27, 2014.[27] [25] The final book was released on March 23, 2015.[25] On December 2, 2015, Yen Press appear that they had licensed the series.[25]

A second manga, titled Re:Nix -Starting Life in Another World-, Chapter two: One Week at the Mansion ( Re：ゼロから始める異世界生活 第二章 屋敷の一週間編 , Re: Nil Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Dai-Ni-Shō: Yashiki no Ishūkan-hen ), with art by Makoto Fugetsu, began serialization in Square Enix's seinen magazine Monthly Large Gangan on October 25, 2014.[25] [28] [29] The final chapter was published on December 24, 2016,[30] [31] and an actress affiliate was published on January 25, 2017.[32] [33] [34] The second adaptation has also been licensed by Yen Press.[35]

Daichi Matsue began serializing a third manga, Re:Naught -Starting Life in Some other Globe-, Chapter 3: Truth of Cypher ( Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活 第三章 Truth of Nix , Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Dai-San-Shō: Truth of Zero ) in Comic Alive 'south July 2015 issue on May 27, 2015.[25] [36] Yen will publish the tertiary adaptation as well.[37]

A manga anthology, titled Re:Zero -Starting Life in Some other World- Official Album Comic ( Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活　公式アンソロジーコミック , Re:Cypher kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Kōshiki Ansorojī Komikku ), was published by Media Factory on June 23, 2016.[38] A 2nd anthology was published on September 23, 2017.[39]

An anime television series adaptation was announced by Kadokawa in July 2015.[47] The series is directed by Masaharu Watanabe and written by Masahiro Yokotani, with animation by the studio White Trick. Kyuta Sakai is serving as both grapheme designer and equally chief animation director.[48] Music for the series is composed past Kenichiro Suehiro.[49] Kentaro Minegishi is the series' manager of photography, and Yoshito Takamine serves as art director. Jin Aketagawa handled sound direction for the anime, and sound effects were produced by Yuji Furuya. Other staff members include Hitomi Sudo (editing), Yu Karube (3D director), Saaya Kinjō (fine art configuration), Izumi Sakamoto (colour design), and Noritaka Suzuki and Gōichi Iwabatake (prop blueprint).[49]

Kenichiro Suehiro reprised his role as composer for the shorts, while Tomoji Furuya of Suwara Pro produced the sound effects. Jin Aketagawa directed the sound at product company Magic Capsule.[55]

The shorts aired on AT-X subsequently each episode of the regular series, starting on April 8, 2016.[55] Crunchyroll acquired the streaming rights to both shorts.[58] Animax Asia subsequently aired the series starting on January 13, 2017.[59]

The kickoff opening theme song was "Redo" by Konomi Suzuki, and the first ending theme was "Styx Helix" by Myth & Roid,[81] while for episode seven the ending theme was "Direct Bet," also by Myth & Roid.[82] The second opening theme song, titled "Paradisus-Paradoxum," was performed by Myth & Roid, while the 2d ending theme, "Stay Alive," was performed by Rie Takahashi.[83] Myth & Roid also performed the ending theme for episode 14 titled "theater D."[84]

In August 2016, game developer 5pb. appear that they were developing a visual novel based on the series, titled Re:Nada − Starting Life in Another World: Decease or Kiss ( Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活 -DEATH OR KISS- , Re:Goose egg kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu -Decease or Kiss- ).[96] [97] The game follows an original story that differs from the calorie-free novel and the anime, and allows the player to choose betwixt routes featuring Emilia, Rem, Ram, Felt, Beatrice, Crusch, Priscilla, or Anastasia.[98] [99] A DLC allows players who pre-ordered the game to supplant the grapheme'south costumes with swimsuits.[100] [101] The opening theme, "yell! magic starts with a kiss" ( yell！～くちびるからはじまる魔法～ , Yell!~ Kuchibiru kara Hajimaru Mahō ~ ), was performed past Suzuki, who sung the anime'south commencement opening theme, while the ending theme, "Dai Dai Daisuki" ( ダイ・ダイ・ダイスキ ), was performed past Minase and Murakawa.[102] The game has received a generally positive score of thirty/forty on Famitsu.[103]

A tactical adventure video game was adult by Chime and published by Spike Chunsoft titled Re:Zippo − Starting Life in Another World: The Prophecy of the Throne ( Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活 偽りの王選候補 , Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Tsuwarino-ō-Sen kōho ) and was released for PlayStation iv, PC, and Nintendo Switch in January 2021.[112] The game has an original story and was produced under the full supervision of original author Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by the series' illustrator Shinichiou Otsuka. It is the first official Re:Zero game to accept an English release.
